According to research (Cornell & Eskin, 2003; Kolb, 1984; Revans, 1998; Schön, 1991; Wilkie & Burns, 2003), professionals learn through reflection in their daily professional practices as well as through experiences, actions, and reflection in their work. Similarly to this, managers learn most effectively through informal, hands-on experiences (Gold, Thorpe, & Mumford, 2010; Marsick, 2003). It is unclear, though, whether hospitality managers gain anything from the approach to experiential learning. Additionally, there is no indication in the literature that their learning is unique from that of other professionals. Certain characteristics of the hotel sector contribute to the creation of a unique environment for management learning. According to Cooper, Fletcher, Fyall, and Wanhill (2008), the service-based industry, which includes hotels, contract food service, restaurants, pubs, bars, and nightclubs, is characterized by intangibility, inseparability, and perishability.
